Who are gel polish and nail extensions not suitable for?

• Nail fungus, inflammation, swelling or redness around the nail, a suspected nail bed infection, or green discolouration under the nail: no application; you may be advised to see a dermatologist. Covering the problem can delay it being noticed.
• Open wounds on the cuticles, bleeding or marked irritation after a manicure, eczema, dermatitis, active psoriasis lesions, pain or tenderness around the nail: we wait until the skin has recovered.
• A known allergy to gel, acrylate or nail extension products, or itching, redness, blisters or swelling on the fingers after a previous application: no treatment if in doubt. A patch test does not rule out allergy completely.
• A nail lifting from the nail bed, a seriously thinned, damaged, painful, brittle or deformed nail, or unexplained discolouration: the cause should be checked first.
• Active nail psoriasis or nail bed damage: a dermatologist's assessment may be needed depending on severity.
• Poor circulation in the fingers, uncontrolled diabetes, slow wound healing or a seriously weakened immune system: not always a barrier, but talk to your healthcare provider first.
• Active warts around the nails or on the hands: the treatment is postponed.
